Vishnu is one of the major Gods and is often considered to be the preserver of the universe. Along with Brahma and Shiva, he is part of the Trimurti, the three main deities.

Vishnu is often depicted as a dark-skinned man with four arms, holding a conch shell, a discus, a mace, and a lotus flower. He is often shown standing or reclining on the coils of a serpent, called Shesha, which represents the universe.

Dasavataras of Vishnu:

  1. Matsya (the fish)
  2. Kurma (the turtle)
  3. Varaha (the boar)
  4. Narasimha (the half-man, half-lion)
  5. Vamana (the dwarf)
  6. Parashurama (the warrior)
  7. Rama (the hero of the Ramayana)
  8. Krishna (the hero of the Mahabharata)
  9. Buddha (the founder of Buddhism)
  10. Kalki (the future savior)

Each of these avatars is believed to have come to Earth at a different time to defeat evil and restore balance to the universe.

Vishnu is also often associated with Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. The two are often depicted together, with Lakshmi sitting on Vishnu’s lap or beside him.

Vishnu is often worshipped in the form of his avatars, as well as in his original form. Devotees offer flowers, incense, and other offerings to Vishnu, and pray for his blessings and protection.
